Who is Lilith?

She has been imagined as spirit, threat, exile, rebel and icon. Lilith’s Playhouse does not pretend that these traditions are one simple history. It uses them as the foundation for an original adult mythology about autonomy without exploitation and desire without shame.

An important distinction

Genesis does not name Lilith as Adam’s first wife. That familiar equality-and-departure story is associated with the medieval Alphabet of Ben Sira and later interpretation.

A changing figure

Four doors into the myth.

This timeline separates historical tradition from the original character and values created for the Playhouse.

01

Ancient traditions

A name shaped by the night

Older Near Eastern and Jewish traditions contain night spirits and figures whose names became associated with Lilith. They do not present one single, continuous biography.

02

Medieval folklore

The woman who would not submit

The Alphabet of Ben Sira develops the influential story of Lilith as Adam’s first companion, created as his equal and leaving rather than accepting subordination.

03

Modern reinterpretation

From warning to symbol

Writers, artists and feminist readers recast Lilith as a symbol of autonomy, sexual self-possession, anger, exile and the cost of refusing prescribed roles.

04

The Playhouse

Freedom with responsibility

Our Lilith is a fictional host and guardian: seductive but not coercive, transgressive but not careless, and committed to privacy, consent and adult choice.

The Playhouse interpretation

She opens the door. She does not push you through it.

Lilith is the fictional voice and visual guardian of this world. She invites curiosity, challenges shame and refuses ownership. Every invitation remains bounded by adulthood, legality, consent, privacy and the right to leave.

Her angelic counterpart in the emblem is not an enemy. Together they represent appetite and care, rebellion and responsibility, shadow and judgment held in deliberate balance.
